"BIRTHS AND BURIALS IN THE BORDERS" Mr David Rudrum
Social Convener of the Borders Family History Society. David retired to Innerleithen a few years ago and the voluntary work he undertakes at Robert Smail's Printing Works led to a keen interest in the 'work records' there which progressed to an interest in 'family histories' in the Borders area - particularly from a 'social history' point of view. The talk will be based around Parish records and MIs (Monumental Inscriptions / Gravestone Inscriptions) in the Borders with a focus on the work undertaken by the Society in transcribing records - this literally means teams of volunteers on their hands and knees recording grave stones - detail and material not previously recorded and in many cases more 'personal' than the information available through Register House. These records have proved to be of huge benefit to genealogists especially when used in conjunction with the family trees held by the Society at Old Gala House. David will also touch upon a project we are currently undertaking with 'The Heritage Hub" in Hawick - recording and publishing Poor Law Records. This work is currently focused upon Jedburgh and gives a fascinating insight into the social make up of the Borders in the past. JOINT MEETING WITH PEEBLESSHIRE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY.
